MEGHALAYA

Meghalaya, meaning “the abode of clouds,” is a scenic state located in Northeast India, known for its rolling hills, deep valleys, and abundant rainfall. It is one of the wettest regions on Earth and is famous for its lush green landscapes, waterfalls, and limestone caves. The state is home to unique natural wonders such as living root bridges, formed by training the roots of rubber trees across streams. Meghalaya shares its borders with Assam and Bangladesh and has a rich ecological diversity supported by its subtropical forests and highland climate.

The cultural heritage of Meghalaya is equally vibrant, shaped mainly by three indigenous tribes—the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia—each with its own traditions, language, and customs. The society is predominantly matrilineal, where lineage and inheritance pass through the female line. The capital city, Shillong, often called the “Scotland of the East,” is known for its pleasant climate, colonial-era charm, and music culture. Agriculture, horticulture, and tourism form the backbone of the state’s economy, making Meghalaya a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural identity.
